With its soaring hills, expansive bridges and an incredible waterfront, everywhere you turn in the Bay has more great photography locations and amazing opportunities for photography.

HERE ARE MY TOP 10 PHOTOGRAPHY LOCATIONS IN SAN FRANCISCO:

10. Cable Cars at California Street: This is taken at the junction of Stockton and California street. Find a suitable spot and frame your shot from here. This place is very busy and the moving cable cars will give you a very small window of time to capture the scene. The best time to shoot is dusk where ambient light matches the city lights - it's absolutely mesmerizing.

9. Pier 39: Sea Lions are one of the reasons why PIER 39 is a top attraction in San Francisco. On a typical day, you can find them lounging in the sun or piled on top of each other on K-Dock in PIER 39's West Marina. You can go there anytime of the day and take their pictures.

8. Fog from Hawk Hill: Hawk Hill is a 923-foot peak in the Marin Headlands, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge and across the Golden Gate strait from San Francisco. It requires about a quarter mile hike. The views are amazing and you may be able to capture landscape submerged in fog - especially in months of March and September when there is a low fog season.

7. Painted Ladies of Alamo Square: Alamo Square is a residential neighborhood and park in San Francisco, California, in the Western Addition. Its boundaries are not well-defined, but are generally considered to be Webster Street on the east, Golden Gate Avenue on the north, Divisadero Street on the west, and Fell Street on the south. You can go in the park and you will see this row of beautiful, victorian era houses called Painted Ladies. In the background, you can see San Francisco's skyscrapers. Evening and dusk are good times to see colorful ambience there. 6. Palace of Fine Arts: The Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District of San Francisco, California is a monumental structure originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in order to exhibit works of art. Completely rebuilt from 1964 to 1974, it is one of only a few surviving structures from the Exposition. It is located at 3601 Lyon St, San Francisco, CA 94123. This place is very easily accessible via car or public transport. Anytime of the day, this place is mesmerizing and offers good photo opportunities.

5. Lombard (Crooked) Street: Lombard Street is an east–west street in San Francisco, California that is famous for a steep, one-block section with eight hairpin turns. Stretching from The Presidio east to The Embarcadero. You cannot easily find the parking near cross streets of Hyde and Lombard as this place gets very busy, but when you do, it'll be worth it. Once you are here, you can enjoy the view and take the shots. Lombard Street, San FranciscoLombard Street, San FranciscoLombard Street, San Francisco

4. Marshall's Beach: This beach is a small, remote shorefront area with rugged terrain, bird-watching & gorgeous views of the Golden Gate Bridge. It is little tricky to reach here as it requires bit of hiking down. The only way to access Marshall’s Beach is by foot off of the Batteries to Bluffs Trail. If you don't want to do hiking, go to the easily accessible Baker Beach which also offers almost same views of Golden Gate Bridge. You need to have wide angle lens to take shots of Golden Gate Bridge from Marshall's beach. Also during sunset time, sun going down in the Pacific Ocean offers amazing photo opportunities as well. 3. Treasure Island (Yerba Buena Island): Yerba Buena Island sits in the San Francisco Bay between San Francisco and Oakland, California. The Yerba Buena Tunnel runs through its center and connects the western and eastern spans of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge. Drive on San Francisco Bay bridge and take the exit to this beautiful island, follow the road to Treasure Island and drive down at water level. Find a suitable parking and be ready with your camera. You will need a tele lens to cover the San Francisco skyline. Also, you can explore the island towards higher ground and discover the places to take shots of east span of bridge and San Francisco. 2. Twin Peaks: Twin Peaks, named for its pair of 922-foot-high summits, is a remote residential neighborhood with modern homes densely packed on steep lots along winding streets. A grassy 64-acre hilltop park is a popular attraction, with its hiking trails leading up to wind-swept peaks and 360-degree views of the Bay Area. It is very easily accessible via car and ample of parking (it gets busy during peak seasons).  San Francisco FogSan Francisco FogSan Frncisco city is a beautiful place and you never know what are you going to find as weather is so unpredictable.. I was on Twin peaks to enjoy a warm weather dusk when I saw fog started pouring in the city....

AND THE TOP ONE IS

1. Golden Gate Bridge (Marin Headlands): The Marin Headlands is a hilly peninsula at the southernmost end of Marin County, California, United States, located just north of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge, which connects the two counties and peninsulas. The entire area is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This place offers unlimited amazing views of Golden gate Bridge with San Francisco in background. If you want to take pictures, plan bit ahead and be there as this place is very busy and finding parking is hard here. Towers in FogTowers in FogGolden Gate Bridge in fog, San Francisco, California

Hope the list above helps. Feel free to ask questions in comments section and I will be happy to respond.

Fog filled Sunset: Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California https://www.kps-photo.com/blog/2015/11/fog-filled-sunset-golden-gate-bridge-san-francisco-california It was one of the moody evenings I decided to take a stop at Hawk Hill in San Francisco and my luck was smiling at me. It was one of those rare sightings where low fog at around sunset was creating this mesmerizing scene. Wind was blowing real hard as well and this beauttiful scene lasted for a shot time only as fog took over everything.

Veiled Curtains https://www.kps-photo.com/blog/2015/8/veiled-curtains Mossbrae falls is a hidden gem around Mount Shasta region of Northern California. It is so amazing to see this place in person. It feels like a  huge veil of water curtain over green moss falling in Sacramento river. If you visit this place in a summer afternoon, is is absolutely stunning to see amazing sunlight giving silvery touch to waterfall and lighting up green moss behind it.

How to go there:  Accessibility to this place is another challenge as it is located in a very secluded place. You will have to travel to town of Dunsmuir in Northern California. You have to come to intersection of Scarlet way and Dunsmuir ave, park your car in a legal parking somewhere and enter thru a arch (Shasta retreat  41.228384, -122.275889) to Scarlet way and keep walking towards railroad (there are signs which will say no trespassing), crossing the river via over bridge (41.230357, -122.279238). Turn right and keep walking next to railroad about 1.5 miles and you will hear the waterfall sound (41.241572, -122.266795).

Technical: I took 3 shots using Nikon D800e and Nikkor 14-24, @ f/11, ISO 50, 24 mm in raw format, initial import and processing in Capture One, created HDR using Photomatix, final touches in Photoshop CS6 and Nik software.

Trip to Crater Lake https://www.kps-photo.com/blog/2015/8/trip-to-crater-lake Crater lake was always in my wish list to visit. This summer one of my friend called me on Friday and said lets have a family outing in Crater lake area. We drove from San Francisco area and stayed at Klamath falls. We started pretty late next day from there as I did not want to deal with massive long weekend traffic. We reached there around late afternoon had some snacks at hut on rim. Kids had lot of fun. We spent good 2-3 hours and decided to come back to hotel around sunset.

While returning , I saw few photographers standing close to rim near a almost dead tree and stopped there. Boy it was a beautiful sight, it was some famous tree which is pretty popular among local photographers. I decided to stay there for sometime and shoot the last sunlight featuring the tree.

Technical: Nikon D800E, Nikkor 14-24, 24mm, f11, 2 shots, raw processing in CaptureOne 8, final touches in Photoshop CS6 and Nik software, Panorama in CS6.

Perception of Depth: San Francisco Cityscape https://www.kps-photo.com/blog/2015/7/perception-of-depth-san-francisco-cityscape I always imagined if I had a real large format camera and I could capture the complete details of this beautiful city of San Francisco. Well to get this idea a reality in digital world, where large electronic sensors of Cameras are cost prohibitive, I decided to create a 200+ Megapixels of panorama by combining several smaller pictures where a panoramic  picture has enough details for  printing up to 4 ft by 14 ft without losing any details.

Technical:

In order to get this vision to reality, I took about 40 individual shots using a telescopic lens (Canon EF 100-400 mark II) on Canon 5D mark III camera capturing every details of the scene. I had to use Apple Macbook PRO (with 16 GB RAM) to get every details combined from those 40 shots and make one panorama. I used Capture One 8 to process each individual image and I later combined using Photoshop CS6. Location of this picture is Forest Road in Treasure Island in San Francisco City.

Calla Lilies of Doud Creek, Garrapata SP, California https://www.kps-photo.com/blog/2015/3/calla-lilies-of-doud-creek-garrapata-sp-california I took my family for a quick outing to Carmel, California around 17 mile drive. We were done well before evening and decide to head south. I stopped by at Doud creek for a quick trip to beach.
To my surprise, I discovered 400-500 people on little creek area, atleast 100 of them must be photographers. Later I found out it was famous bloom of Call Lillies during March-April Season. I had to capture this beauty. So I setup my camera and clicked few snaps just to make sure I have few shots without people. Heavy fog moved in before towards evening so my hopes of capturing the sunset colors were dashed so I moved on towards BIXBY Bridge..

Autumn dusk at gates: Yosemite Valley https://www.kps-photo.com/blog/2014/10/autumn-dusk-at-gates-yosemite-valley I am sure gate view on the valley floor of Yosemite National Park in California is a favorite spot for everyone. Sunset at Foster City lagoon https://www.kps-photo.com/blog/2014/6/sunset-at-foster-city-lagoon In summer, It is usually very windy around the San Mateo and Foster City area and results with fog in the sky in the evening. On the day that I took this picture I saw the sky, and there were high clouds and I knew that it would have burning colors during the sunset. I walked from my house to Beach park blvd bridge near Lucky's complex and waited for sunset. It was beautiful, as the sky had stunning, vibrant colors from the sunset to about 30 minutes after. I must have captured about 200 snaps and it was hard to decide which ones I should process to depict the scene which my eyes saw...  Here is the picture.

Grey Whale Cove overlook https://www.kps-photo.com/blog/2014/6/grey-whale-cove-overlook This is an image shot of Gery whale cove overlooking above highhway 1 in pacifica. I was moved by the beauty of the scene fog glowing with last sunlight on the mountain cliff and car trails on pacific highway with bit of ocean water... I stayed there for almost 2 hours watching the scene and drama unfold. I used long exposure and digital blending technique to capture this image.

Technical: NIKON D800E; Nikon 4.0-24.0 mm f/2.8; 24mm, f/14; ISO 50, several shots at various exposures, raw import in LR5, exported to Adobe photoshop CC for digital blending.

Cable Car and Bay Bridge, San Francisco https://www.kps-photo.com/blog/2014/5/cable-car-and-bay-bridge-san-francisco I made several trips to this iconic location in Nob hill area in San Francisco City on California street. I had to stop in middle of street and synchronize with street signals. Red signal gave me 30 sec each time to stay in middle of street full of vehicles in both directions. My first trip, I was able to take few shots but they were not exactly crisply focussed so I had to make one more trip and then it became several more before I found the 3 shots to create this panorama (Vertorama). Hope you will enjoy the view.

Technical: Canon EOS 5D Mark III, EF70-200mm f/4L IS USM, 3 shots, each 30.0 sec;   f/10;   ISO 50, raw imported in LR5, after white balance and shadow recovery, exported to Adobe Photoshop CC to create a panorama..

It was pretty interesting sky with high clouds so I headed to Natural Bridges state beach. I was surprised to see sun was setting in opposite direction and there were no chances to see any red colors in sky. I took few shots of this beautiful rock and when I came home, I could this shot which had a interesting water movement...

Lake Tahoe Blues https://www.kps-photo.com/blog/2014/4/lake-tahoe-blues Unusual snow in late April in Lake tahoe gave me the opportunity to capture this moment. My plan was to catch early morning sun at Emerald Bay but morning turned out to be very gloomy and cloudy. Around late morning, sky cleared up and it brought bright sun.. I rushed to this beautiful spot and captured this in my camera...

Half Dome from Glacier Point: Yosemite National Park https://www.kps-photo.com/blog/2014/4/half-dome-from-glacier-point-yosemite-national-park Glacier Point, Yosemite National Park, California, USA

This year Glacier point road in Yosemite NP opened up on April 15 (Usually it opens up around mid May). I drove from home for about 4 hours and reached here around late afternoon. It was a magical place, patches of light,, low hanging clouds touching the tip of half dome. I was a magical scene.. I stayed there for a while, soon dark clouds covered all the area and it started raining...

Technical: Canon 5D mark III, EF70-200mm f/4L IS USM, @70mm, F10, ISO-50. This is a panorama of 3 shots, taken in raw, pre processed in Adobe lightroom, exported to Adobe Photoshop CC and merged in Panorama. Exported to NIK software for touch ups..

Golden gate Bridge : Dusk at Fort Point, San Francisco https://www.kps-photo.com/blog/2014/4/golden-gate-bridge-dusk-at-fort-point-san-francisco Yesterday I went to San Francisco to get a pink sunset but traffic was really bad on all the freeways getting in city. By the time I reached the city, Sky was already turning blue all the colors were gone.. I settle in for blue hour and found this vantage point at the end of Marin drive in Fort point. Setup my Camera and took few shots and created in landscape image..

Tech: Canon 5D mark III, Canon EF 17-40 F/4 L, 2 shots in Raw @27mm, @F8, one for 61sec for Sky and Bridge focusing the Bridge, another one at 110 sec focusing foreground. Both imported in Adobe Lightroom 5, adjustment done for highlights and shadows, white balance correction is done and exported as layers in Adobe Photoshop CC as layers. In Photoshop, layers are blended with foreground and bridge.  Blended image is corrected for color and send to NIK software for selective sharpening and extracting details from clouds...

Reflections in water stream: Muir Woods https://www.kps-photo.com/blog/2014/4/reflections-in-water-stream-muir-woods Reflections in water stream: Muir WoodsReflectionsReflections in water stream: Muir Woods This was an sunny afternoon in Muir woods national park. I came across these stunning reflections in river stream and stopped by. Took my tripod and came close to water, setup the camera from about 2 feet from the water surface. Camera was at 24mm, F8 (for clarity) and no filters on my my lens. I switched on the 5 shot bracketing and took 5 shots  (-2EV, -1EV, 0EV, +1EV and +2EV) in raw format. Later I imported these shots to Adobe Lightroom, there I adjusted the color, highlights and dark and imported those images to Adobe photoshop CC in layers. I adjusted the layers and blended using the TK luminosity masks, adjusted the lights and corrected the colors using NIK software plug in for Adobe photoshop...

Here is the final version....

Perfect Reflections: San Francisco Bay Bridge at night https://www.kps-photo.com/blog/2014/4/perfect-reflections It was a regular friday evening and we were out to San Francisco to do some shopping. After dinner, we decided to have quick stop at Ghirardelli square for a Ice cream.. After we were done, I remember this location near Java Cafe where lot of water stays after the rain storm. I stopped by just to check and found perfect reflections of bay bridge and put my camera to work... Check this picture out... Camera needed to stay close to water surface so that it can take complete reflection of bridge....
